The Difference Between The Office and The Gift
Ephesians 4:11 New English Translation (NET Bible)
11 It was he who gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,
For generations many in the church have confused the gift of prophecy, with the actual office of a Prophet. And yes there are actual Prophets that walk the earth. The ministry of the Prophet is still active, and declaring the word of the Lord to nations. In this chapter however, I will attempt to explain the difference between, someone that just carries the gift of prophecy mentioned in (1 Corinthians 14:1-12) ,versis a person walking in the office of a Prophet mentioned in (Ephesians 4:11). There is a big difference in the two, and not understanding this can cause ones destruction in the spirit. So I think a good place to begin is to help us understand the purpose of the gift of prophecy, separate from the ministry of a Prophet. What is the purpose of the gift of prophecy in scripture? Biblically that is given to us in:
1 Corinthians 14:1-12 (ESV)
14 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
Prophecy is for the purpose of upbuilding and encouragement and comfort based on scripture ( 1 Corinthians 14:3). That seems wonderful then why the division in the area of the prophetic in the body of Christ. For instance a great man of God, who I will not mentioned who flows heavily in the area of words of knowledge, and the gift of prophecy. He prophesies with a great love and compassion for people, however one day while I was listening to his teaching he said that another man of God who wrote a best selling book on a prophetic topic concerning the end times was not prophesy, and is doom and gloom. He believed that prophecy should never be used this way. This was his mistake as men and women of God we believe at time our revelation concerning a specific topic is the only revelation. However, God has set first Apostles, second Prophets,Evangelist, and Teacher lastly Pastor. So the issue has come one, different giftings misunderstand the function of a certain office. The Prophet carries a authority given by God, that no other office carries. There word carry weight from heaven, as they are God’s voices in the earth, and as we will see every prophet of the Old Testament carried a different and distinct mantle. I believe many of you reading carry mantles from these amazing Prophets of old, especially as a body I believe that the mantle of Elijah is about to rest on a entire generation in this end time. The Office of a Prophet gives direction, and correction to the body of Christ, which is different from that of the gift, which is to only by used for the purpose listed above. Not everyone is a Prophet, but The Father's heart is that all would prophesy, according to ( 1 Corinthians 14:5). The Father in this season is calling forth a prophetic people that walk in intimacy, and union with him, that hear his voice through fellowship in the secret place.
In the Bible, the concept of a prophet and a prophetic person may seem similar, but there are distinctive differences between the two. A prophet is someone who receives direct revelations from God and is called to deliver specific messages or warnings to individuals, communities, or nations. For example, in the Old Testament, we see prophets like Moses, Isaiah, and Jeremiah who spoke on behalf of God to the people of Israel, conveying messages of repentance, judgment, or future events. Prophets are chosen and appointed by God for a specific purpose, often with a clear mission or assignment. They operate in a higher level of authority and typically have a well-defined ministry focused on delivering God's word to the people.
On the other hand, a prophetic person is someone who has been gifted by the Holy Spirit with the ability to hear from God and discern His voice and will. While not all prophetic people are called to the office of a prophet, they play a crucial role in the body of Christ by edifying, encouraging, and comforting others through sharing the messages, visions, or words of wisdom they receive from God. Prophetic people often operate in churches or ministry settings, providing guidance, direction, and spiritual insight to individuals or groups. They are sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and are instrumental in building up the faith of believers and helping them grow in their relationship with God.
In essence, while a prophet holds a specific office and carries a distinct authority in delivering God's messages with power and accuracy, a prophetic person functions more broadly in the body of Christ, bringing encouragement, exhortation, and spiritual insight to others. Both are essential in the Kingdom of God, each serving a unique purpose in fulfilling God's will and building up His people. Understanding the differences between a prophet and a prophetic person helps us appreciate the diverse ways in which God speaks to His children and equips them for His work in the world.
